Starting a career in mining

At Fortescue, we offer a range of opportunities for students and graduates looking to take their next step at a leading, global mining company.

Apprenticeships

Fortescue’s industry leading apprenticeship program is part of our commitment to offering diverse and rewarding careers.

Our apprentices have the opportunity to grow their skills and knowledge during a four-year structured program that includes on the job training and a range of classroom TAFE and offsite development, which leads to a nationally recognised trade qualification.

Covering a range of trades to support the business including electricians, heavy vehicle mechanics, fixed plant mechanics, fabricators and light vehicle mechanics, all apprentices are rotated around the sites to ensure they receive maximum learning opportunities.

Fortescue's Trade Up program provides existing Aboriginal employees with the opportunity to gain a Certificate II in a chosen trade discipline, before progressing into the apprenticeship program.

Trade Up

Training is at the heart of everything we do, as it is the building block to driving sustainable change in people’s lives.

Graduates

Are you looking for an opportunity to use your degree in a practical and hands-on environment?

Fortescue offers a two year, structured graduate program giving participants exposure to a site operational role, technical placements, as well as experience in a business functional role aimed at encouraging ‘whole of business’ thinking.

Our graduate program has been running for six years with 100 per cent of graduates securing employment at the end of the program.

The program offers opportunities in the science-based disciplines including mechanical, electrical, mining and process control engineering, metallurgy and geology. The programs are fly-in fly-out based to ensure that operational experience is provided to broaden the career opportunities for these new mining employees.

Graduates will receive ongoing training and development, mentoring by one of our leaders and access to a strong network so they can share experiences, learn from each other and develop contacts that will last their entire career.

Eligibility

Fortescue’s graduate program is open to students in their final year of University or who have recently completed a relevant degree.

We are looking for passionate graduates who will step up to the challenge and be part of our innovative and driven organisation. We are especially keen to speak to suitably qualified people from the Pilbara region as well as Aboriginal people.

VAC Program

Vacation Student Program

Fortescue’s Vacation Program offers students the opportunity to work at one of our operations in a 'hands on' environment where they are given a project and are paired with a Fortescue employee who will provide professional supervision and mentoring.

The program runs for twelve weeks from December to February and most placements are site based on a fly-in fly-out roster.
